South Rim Trail - Big Bend National Park, Tx
South Rim Trail is located in Big Bend National park and is the mother-load of trails in Texas. Big Bend National Park is a long drive from Houston but worth it. Big Bend rests on the border of Mexico and Texas and is home to the Chisos Mountain range. The most scenic views can be found in the Chisos mountains. There are a lot of trails throughout the park but if you're limited on time stay in the Chisos camp site.
South Rim trail is rated as extremely difficult with a 2000' elevation gain and spanning 12.6 miles long. It's recommend to the trail 30-40 minutes before sunrise because it will take 8-12 hours to grind the South Rim trail. Although South Rim trail is brutal, half way in you are rewarding with the best views in Texas.
Be sure to come prepared. You need to bring plenty of water and food for the hike. My suggestions are a 100oz CamelBak, food for lunch, plenty of snacks, emergency kit, pocket knife and a flashlight. It's a lot of gear for the hike but its better to be proactive than reactive.
